Here is an outline of the direction SAS is taking in order to become accredited. There are two aspects of this accreditation, the High performance,
and community development.
I attended a session at The
South African Sports Commission. From this, it has emerged that in order
to be accepted and accredited,
SAS must follow a very long process. At the end, we will have a
system in place that is equal to any in the world. This process has begun.
A proposal from the South African Sailing Federation has been
submitted for the above process.
1.In order to ensure the above, a facilitators
meeting must be held. This is organised by The
South African Sports Commission Trainee coaches must
attend from all regions. This will be set up by end August. 3 days
long. You will be advised of this meeting. In order to have the best impact,
we will need at least 20 prospective facilitators.
2.The manuals must go through a process whereby
coaches, teachers and interested parties must attend. The service providers,
(coaches)
must get together with the Theta
trainers, (linked to the SA Sports commission) to form a working
group to discuss the syllabus and manuals,
to decide exactly what is required. This is one day.
The proposal will be
discussed.
This meeting is incredibly important, as the ‘Standards’ will be
determined. That is the standards for each level of coaching from grass roots
to high performance.
Certification will then be provided.
Facilitators for the first
meeting should be
Evelyn Osborne Peter
Clayton Ivan Gibbons
Malcolm Osborne Megan
Clayton John Samuel
Graham Willcox Andrew
Jones Gillian Robinson
Sheila Tanner Kyle Klaas
Bill Webster Bronwen
Klaas
Leon de Raay Lindsay Samuel
Grant Caroline Kerry Samuel
Donald Coward Bridget

Brian Sutherland Matthew

Each region to send as many as possible
We need minimum 20 to make an impact. This is the start. Each
region will send facilitators to be trained.
All coaches and facilitators must submit a CV including a log book
of hours spent training level 1, 2, 3,
and high performance
This is for the High Performance aspect of
Sailing. As we cannot ignore the sailors who are already at this level, we need
to continue this programme,
which will dove tail into the full accreditation process.
We will be using the athletes already in the system, and the
coaches will formulate a process of entering into this level.
This is an important step, as the coaches from all regions must
communicate in order for this to go forward.
This sailing squad will help keep the sailors in the fold, as
there will be “life after oppies”
This programme has been initiated, and a meeting has been set up
on Wednesday 6th August at the CSIR in Pretoria at 4.30.
As many coaches as possible are to attend this meeting, as the
programme will be discussed.
The team will then move on to the Sprog Provincials at Pretoria on
9th and 10th August. Here the technical team from CSIR
together with the
coaches will photograph the sailors in order to set up the
programme. Hopefully all coaches will participate over the weekend.
Those from the other regions who cannot attend this meeting will
be informed on the progress.
The CSIR need to do the initial programme so that the Olympic
athletes will benefit from the input.

All coaches please reply to Evelyn if you are able to attend this
meeting and the weekend.
If you have any coach who would like to attend, please contact me
as soon as possible.
All athletes who sail in the Sprog provincials will provide very
important data for the programme, and they are encouraged to enter.
The programme needs racing and practise footage.
I hope as many sailors as possible will join in this initial programme, as we need your input.
Regards,
Evelyn Osborne.
