NOTICE OF RACE

 

1.      ORGANISING AUTHORITY

 

1.1        The Race is organized by the Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC) in Richards Bay and is sailed under the auspices of Sailing KZN.

 

2.      RULES

 

2.1        The Race will be sailed under the International Sailing Federation Racing Rules of sailing for 2001 to 2004 (which are still valid until July 2005), the International Regulations for the Prevention of collisions at Sea, the class rules of any section of the fleet entering as a class, the Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions. In the event of conflict between any of the rules above, they shall take precedence in reverse order; i.e. the Sailing Instructions takes precedence over all others, then the NOR next, etc.

 

2.2        Except that between 19h00 hours and 05h30 hours the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea will replace the rules of RRS Part 2.

 

2.3        Specific attention is drawn to RRS Fundamental Rule 4, which states: A boat is solely responsible for deciding whether or not to start or to continue racing.

 

2.4        The Race shall be a category C event in terms of RRS Appendix 1, Regulation 20.  Sponsors advertising decals, if required, shall be displayed on the Port and Starboard bow and will be supplied free of charge.

 

2.5        Advertising is limited to advertisements, which in the opinion of the Race Committee, do not conflict with the race sponsor or government regulations and are considered to be in good taste.

 

2.6        Participants in the event shall supply the organizers with a copy of all press releases and all promotional material issued by or on behalf of themselves or their sponsors relating to the event.

 

 

3.      ELIGIBILITY

 

3.1        The skipper and all crew members must be members in good standing of a SA Sailing affiliated Yacht Club, failing which he/she will be required to purchase temporary SAS membership for the duration of the event.

 

3.2        At least one other person on each yacht must be in possession of at least a SA Sailing Coastal Skipper’s certificate or equivalent, these must be submitted along with all the documentation when entering the event, the Race Committee will make the final decision.

 

3.3        All competing yachts shall carry a minimum of two crewmembers, including the skipper.

4.      SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

 

4.1        Sailing instructions will be issued to all entrants prior to the start of the Race.

 

5.      CLASSES

 

5.1        The event is open to all mono and multihull yachts with SA Sailing Category A clearance.  Category B yachts may enter, however they must upgrade certain items of safety equipment for the duration of the event.  Note:- These items may be borrowed or hired.

 

5.1.1        Must have a life raft rated for the number of crew on board, it must be complete with a copy of the valid certificate of service;

5.1.2        Must have a minimum of four red parachute flares ;

5.1.3        Must have two orange smoke flares ;

5.1.4        Must have four red hand held flares ;

5.1.5        One safety harness for each crew member;

5.1.6        Grab bag to E pack standard in watertight container;

5.1.7        At least one GPS unit;

5.1.8        All crewmembers must also complete the declaration and Indemnity forms included on/with the entry form.

 

5.2        There will be two divisions sailed in the Race, namely :-

 

Division 1 :-            ZYC PHRF handicapped mono hulls

Division 2 :-            ZYC PHRF handicapped multi hulls.

 

Separate results will be published and prizes awarded where there are four or more yachts of a “one design” class competing and / or four or more yachts with a valid IRC rating certificate competing.

 

5.3        The ZYC Race Committee will determine PHRF Handicaps and their decision will be final.

 

5.4        All yachts are eligible for the Sailing KZN Blue Water Series in either the IRC (all valid IRC handicapped boats) or Cruising (all others.)

 

5.5        Size Limits are as follows :-

 

5.5.1        Minimum L.O.A of 8.0m

5.5.2        Maximum L.O.A of 27.0m

5.5.3        Minimum displacement of 2500Kg

5.5.4        Maximum internal ballast of 5% of Total Displacement

 

6.      ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 

6.1        There shall be an entry fee of R500.00 per Yacht and R85.00 per participant.

 

6.2        Entries shall be submitted to the Office at the Zululand Yacht Club, on the prescribed entry form and shall be accompanied by copies of the following documents.  (Faxed copies will be accepted)

 

6.2.1        Port Authority form HPC 2/9/4 (Flight plan)

6.2.2        Crew List AND Indemnity Form – Signed by all members of crew

6.2.3        The yachts offshore clearance certificate or letter of confirmation.

6.2.4        Copy of The yachts current harbour license disk

6.2.5        The skippers and other person (as per 3.2 above) SAS certificate (min coastal skipper) or approval from Offshore Sailing Committee for D.O.C. Plus Experience.

6.2.6        IRC RATING or Class Measurement CERTIFICATE if applicable

6.2.7        Colour photograph of yacht in digital pgf format

 

6.3        The closing date for entries is the 11th of March 2005.

6.4        Late entries accompanied by a late entry fee surcharge of R250.00 may be accepted at the discretion of the Race Committee.

 

7.      BRIEFING

 

7.1        The compulsory briefing will take place at Inhaca Island before the start of the Race on Thursday the 24th of March 2005 at 17h00.  The briefing will take place at Lucas’ Restaurant on Inhaca Island. 

 

8.      THE COURSE

 

8.1    The Course shall be from the Start at 10h00 on Friday the 25th of March 2005 off the Island of Inhaca (Mozambique) to the Finish line (off Richards Bay Harbour) as set by the ZYC Committee an approximate distance of 220 nautical miles. 

 

9.      Time Limit

 

9.1    The cut-off time, by when competitors in all divisions and/or classes must have crossed the finish line in order to be classified as official finishers, will be 12h00 on Sunday the 27th of March 2005.

    

10.  PRIZEGIVING

 

10.1    The Prize Giving will take place at the Zululand Yacht Club on Sunday the 27th  of  March 2005 at 17h00.

 

10.2    The Blue Water series awards are given out at the Sailing KZN Annual dinner.

 

11.  LIABILITY

 

11.1  The skipper and every crewmember will be required to sign the Indemnity form provided.

 

12.   MOORINGS

 

12.1          All visiting yachts will be provided with temporary moorings at the Zululand Yacht Club free of charge for one week before the start and one week after the finish of the Race.

 

13.  ERRORS AND OMMISIONS

 

13.1          On good cause, the Organising Committee reserves the right to amend any of the provisions of this Notice of Race.
